I’m alive!

It is interesting to haul a ~4000lb trailer 550 miles. I thought maybe the move up from Columbus might make it easier to move down here… but not really. There were a few 5%-7% grades to go up and down (much more steep than anything on I-71) that made me nervous. Ironically, it was going up hills that ended up being worse. Somehow, the cruise control in my XTerra managed to control the descent pretty easily, I only seemed to vary about 5 miles per hour on the really steep hills. I say going up was worse because people are idiots. The first thing you should realize when hauling a (relatively) large load is that accelerating up a hill, while not impossible, is not recommended. There was one hill where I was maintaining about 60 up and I was coming up on a Ryder (I think) van that was going about 40 with flashers on. No problem, I moved over and was getting ready to pass. Unfortunately, a vehicle that was going about 50 up the hill was also coming up on the van (it was actually in front of me so I was going to pass both) decided it couldn’t wait for me to go by and cut me off with about 15 feet of space… I had to slow down and even with breaks came within 2-3 feet of the cars bumper (even up hill it is hard to stop [cumulatively] 6000lbs). I was relegated to less than 50 the rest of the 3-4 miles up the hill.

I got to my apartment at about 4 and moving in sucked. It took about 2 hours to unload the trailer and the truck even with a little help from my uncle. I spent almost the entire night putting the furniture I had ordered together (thank God the leasing office put it in my apartment by the way) and eventually put my bed together so I could sleep (read pass-out) at about 10. At about 8 the next morning the TimeWarner guy actually showed up on time and got my cable and internet going (woo-hoo) and I spent the rest of the day running errands (spending more money). Everything seems to be as it should be now. Most everything is put away, I only have about 3 boxes of stuff left that will probably never be unpacked. Eventually I’ll go grocery shopping today so I can stop eating out (which is very expensive).

I like the apartment. Despite its size, it doesn’t feel cramped. That is most likely because the kitchen is open instead of closed which really does open everything up. My bedroom isn’t any bigger than the college apartments I’ve had. I can live with that, although, my desk and computer don’t really fit in it.

I’ll try to get pictures up sometime.
